India has reported six additional cases of the COVID-19 sub-variant JN.1, bringing the total count of infections from this new variant to 69, according to official sources. Most of the patients infected with JN.1 are currently in home isolation, and there has been no notable increase in hospitalization rates.

NITI Aayog member (Health) Dr. V K Paul emphasized the importance of increased testing and strengthened surveillance systems at the state level while closely investigating the new variant.

Despite the rise in cases and the presence of the JN.1 sub-variant in the country, officials have indicated that there is no immediate cause for concern. Approximately 92% of those infected with JN.1 are choosing home-based treatment, suggesting a mild illness.

Hospitalization rates have not increased significantly, and COVID-19 is often incidentally found in patients hospitalized for other medical conditions. Health Secretary Sudhansh Pant has urged states to implement critical COVID-19 control measures, especially considering the upcoming festive season, and monitor and report district-wise cases regularly for early detection of rising trends.
